        oiled, dedicated, and directed leadership team. More than any other period,
        the first nine to twelve months of new leadership prove to be the most oppor-
        tune period for individuals to come together and mesh into an effective work
        team. This window of opportunity is critical for you. This is the time when
        new expectations can best be instilled and new habits formed. The challenge
        is to aid the group in identifying and strengthening the fundamentals neces-
        sary to achieve a motivated, focused, and dedicated team. If this transforma-
        tion is not well under way early in your transition, and if it is not in place after
        approximately nine to twelve months, it becomes increasingly difficult and
        sometimes impossible to effect. If a strong leadership team has not been
        formed by the end of your first year, your success may be seriously jeopard-
        ized. Let’s look at what can be done during this early period.
