safely within what can be treated as seriously academic. However, the typeface
is interesting in that context. The serif font, Times New Roman, is used as an
additional means to ensure the safety of tradition. The question raised at that
point is this: is ‘font’ also mode?
This is not all that needs to be said here: I have not mentioned the elements
and processes that establish coherence and cohesion across multimodal
ensembles. These are, again, similar in semiotic principle, and distinct in the
material and cultural form of the means of doing this. The task of establishing
the principles here as in many areas is at the very beginning.
