Organic Growth

demeanor is very different. There’s no sense of distrust; we’re defi ning
our own needs and fi nding our own solutions. The only feelings are
                  accomplishment and relief.
Your responsibility as a culture builder is not to sell your new cul-
tural patterns, but simply to display and broadcast them. When your
additions in progress discover for themselves how useful they are, the
change will come willingly and without any selling from you.

                  Creating Role Models
You may be wondering about the fi nal requirement for members of
your cultural crystal. To be considered members, people must not only
practice overtness about task and clarity of relationship with you, but
role-model them to the rest of their own networks of connections too.
Does this sound like it might be diffi cult to achieve? At fi rst glance,
it goes beyond everything else we have discussed, and you may feel
some cynicism about it. Even if you can effect a change in your own
relationship with one or more individuals (a tall order in itself), how
can you go so far as to change the relationships those individuals have
with other people? And all without attempting to “sell” anything?
You’re not even involved in those relationships!
Prepare yourself. The answer will seem either unbelievable or obvi-
ous, depending on how much your crystal has grown when you read
this: the change will happen all by itself.
Your new additions will change their interactions with others natu-
rally, because it makes sense to do so. The more effective you are at
role-modeling, demonstrating, and implementing overtness and clar-
ity with your additions in progress, the sooner they will realize how
practical and helpful those patterns are, and the more quickly they
will begin to use them elsewhere in their work lives. When they start
to reap the positive benefi ts of the new patterns with you, they’ll
naturally look to replicate those same patterns elsewhere to get more
                  of the same.
Your only job is to plant seeds. If a new addition talks about her
workplace purpose, you can suggest that she share it with her man-
