9 You . . . as the Defi ner
n the popular 1990s cartoon series “Pinky and the Brain,” two
I genetically enhanced talking lab mice made weekly comic and ill-
fated bids for world domination. Ostensibly a children’s program, the
series had a good dose of adult humor as well, and it still has some-
thing of a cult following years later. Fans of many ages still recall the
two-line dialogue that opened each and every episode:
PINKY: Gee, Brain, what do you want to do tonight?
BRAIN: The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over
the world.
Hopefully, your own intentions in becoming a culture builder are
not so absurdly megalomaniacal. (If they are, please review the com-
ments about ethics in Chapter 1!) Yet our fi nal chapter opens with
this seemingly silly reference because it answers the question of what
you should do once you’ve fi nally reached your highest level of cul-
tural infl uence.
OTHER PERSON: Gee, now that you’re a defi ner of culture, what do
you want to do today?
YOU: The same thing I do every day. Try to be overt about tasks
and seek clarity within relationships.
