Principle Two, Understanding, but everyone needs to know how they
are doing. Tracking progress is critical for helping people to keep
focused when distractions are all around.
Fourth, support your employees. Encourage them, remove obsta-
cles and distractions, be positive and optimistic yourself, be a good
listener, have your antenna out to detect how your employees are deal-
ing with challenges and life, make sure they receive awards along the
way, and celebrate successes.
McKay Christensen, president of Melaleuca, Inc., has a motivational
approach that very simply incorporates much of what it takes to moti-
vate and to sustain motivation for workers of any kind, mobile or not.

Motivating by Helping People Reach Their Potential
At our company we’ve found a simple leadership formula that
works at all levels of the organization is to create a servant mind-
set with our 2,500 employees. It involves three steps:
Step 1: Clearly set the vision.
Step 2: Help each associate understand their stewardship role in
that vision, and establish a way for them to regularly account for
that stewardship.
Step 3: Focus almost exclusively on helping others reach their
full potential.
Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the formula. It’s extremely
challenging to create this type of culture. Once you do, however,
your organization, family, or group will never be the same. Imag-
ine being an employee where your manager focuses almost ex-
clusively on helping you reach your full potential. Wouldn’t that
be energizing?
