characterized by the hierarchical allocation of the module. More specifi-
cally, the function of the machine was first classified into the turning
process, tooling, measurement, work loading, and tool changing from the
viewpoint of the automatized flexible turning. Then the necessary module
was determined in the hierarchical way by identifying the importance of
the modules, i.e., principal, associate, special, and adapter modules, when
manufacturing the machine. The same hierarchical system was also
applied to the tooling system of quick changing type, which is regarded
as a predecessor of that of Sandvick, already shown in Fig. 1- 1.
The methodology proposed by Dietz was applied to the design of the turn-
ing machine of Fronter type, so that each user could have a cost-effective
