Selection of model parameters
Ground motion in underground structures depends on geotechnical parameters
such as elastic modulus (E), initial horizontal stress coefficient (K ), mass density

(γ), Poisson’s ratio (v), cohesion (c), and internal friction angle (ф). This is the
case where the Mohr-Coulomb criterion is used as a failure criterion. If the Hoek-
Brown criterion is used, strength parameters c and ф should be replaced by m
and s (Hoek and Brown 1980).
Assuming the mass density and Poisson’s ratio constant and adopting the Mohr-
Coulomb model, the model parameter vector and mean vector p are expressed
as follows:
