Chapter 8

                Motivational Challenges

“Others will underestimate us, for although we judge
ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, others judge us
only by what we have already done.”
                                   —Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

otivational challenges can seem overwhelming at times.
It’s easy to say, “I would be a great motivator, but how can
Manyone motivate under these circumstances? I’m supervis-
ing people who don’t seem to care, are negative, constantly complain
about the rules, or just don’t get along.” This is not the time to give
up; you need to double your efforts both to motivate yourself and to
overcome these challenges to motivate others. While sometimes it’s
necessary to recognize a poor fit, the motivational employer can turn
most staff around by tapping into the smallest window of opportunity
to help them make positive changes. Norman Vincent Peale, author
of The Power of Positive Thinking, wrote, “People become really quite
remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When
they believe in themselves, they have the first secret of success.”
The diversity challenge is also always increasing. People who
came up the ranks with a traditional hierarchy are working later in
life and mixing at all levels with a new breed of young people who
come in with strong skills and high expectations. The current level
of cultural diversity would have seemed extraordinary not long ago.
Each category brings its own set of challenges.
