Health Insurance
The Motivational Mindset
■ With the high cost of health insurance, employees value good
coverage and factor it in with earnings. Health insurance is a
valuable benefit that shows employees you care about their
well-being.
■ Consider a variety of approaches before selecting a program
for your company.
■ Shop for the best deal on health insurance so you can pass the
savings on to your employees.
■ Be sure that employees have all necessary information about
options and providers. Give employees the direct contact
information for your broker or insurance carrier.
■ Many people don’t bother to learn the requirements and
regulations on their own and can be hurt financially in a
health crisis by not following certain protocols. Ask your
broker to provide free seminars to help employees become
knowledgeable health care consumers and fully understand
their benefits. Even those motivated to understand health
care options are often stymied by the choices, packages, and
exclusions.
■ Alternative health care is becoming a mainstream demand. Be
aware of these options when shopping for health plans.
■ Employees have diverse health care needs. One employee
might choose a lower premium and higher deductible than
another. A split plan allows employees to choose from different
plans, even different companies.
■ A cafeteria plan (also called a flexible benefit plan or a Section
125 plan) allows each employee to select from a menu of
coverage options. Someone may, for instance, choose health,
life, and disability insurance but not dental, while someone
else might choose only health and dental. Cafeteria plans offer
a tax advantage as well.
