P. 16

Chapter 1

                         Why Motivate?

“If you want to build a ship, don’t herd people together to
collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but
rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the
            sea.”
                                       —Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

s you read about motivational phrases and behaviors, you will
notice a pattern of open communication and respect. That is
Athe basis for motivation, and many of the words and actions to
motivate are small and simple, especially given how powerful they are.

        Motivation Versus Demotivation

Most people understand the benefits of motivating employees. We
have all been demotivated and felt undervalued. Remember the
people who have motivated you most and those who have had the
        opposite effect.
The reasons for motivating are far more compelling than the
        excuses for not motivating.

        Excuses for Not Motivating Employees

          ■ “I, as the employer or manager, have the option of cycling
people out as they fail to meet my expectations.” Constant
