Example 1: Design Problem, Vertical Separator
Determine the diameter and height (seam-to-seam length) of a vertical
separator for the following operating conditions:
Gas rate: 15 MMSCFD
Gas specific gravity: 0.6
Oil rate: 3000 bbl/day

Oil gravity: 35 API
Operating pressure: 985 psi

Operating temperature: 60 F
Retention time: 3 min

Solution

1. Determine gas and oil properties: For 0.6 specific gravity gas at

60 F and 985 psi (1000 psia),
