104 Burial histories
5.6 Further reading
A formulation of a temperature and a pressure equation for compacting sedimentary basins,
similar to the one above, is proposed by Søreng (1989) and Wangen (1993). The burial
history of a sedimentary basin can also be reconstructed in 1D with the so-called “back-
stripping” method. This topic is discussed in Section 7.14 in connection with basin load
and subsidence. There are also techniques that reconstruct the complex geometry of faulted
basins in 2D and 3D. It should also be mentioned that there are iterative schemes that
minimize the misfit between modeled and observed stratigraphic data by optimizing litho-
spheric stretching factors and paleo-water depth (Poplavskii et al., 2001, Bellingham and
White, 2002, Rüpke et al., 2008).
