B CHAPTER FIVE
The Real Job of Managers
Keeping Employees Aligned and Engaged
It’s not enough to do your best. You must know what to do and then do
your best.
—W. Edwards Deming
If you truly believe your primary purpose as a manager is to do everything
possible to help your employees succeed, you are acknowledging that each
time an employee fails, it is one of your failures.
—Ferdinand Fournies
: CARRIE: LUCKY TO HAVE THE MANAGER I DO
I’ve been reporting to Gerard for five years now, and he’s a big
reason I’m still here.
He gives me different ideas about how to do things, but he always
gives me leeway to make my own decisions. He’s a sounding board
for me. We usually meet at least once a day to make sure I know
what’s expected. And I keep him informed so things run smoothly.
