         CYLINDER SIZING


           Cooling jackets, lubricant, packing and ring material limit cylinder tem-
         peratures. 275°F (135°C)  is set as ideal  maximum with 375°F (190°C) as
         absolute  limit of  operating  temperatures.  Using  Equation A-l  with  the
         above limits, the design temperature ratio per cylinder can be set.

           Figure A-l  is a plot of Equation A-l .

           T 2 actual may be obtained from  these values where isentropic or  adia-
         batic efficiencies are known  from:

           The design compression and tension load on the piston rod must not be
         exceeded  and,  therefore,  rod  load  must be  checked  on  each  cylinder
         application. Rod load is defined  as follows:
