The guides are machined in the frame at 90 degrees to the crankshaft and
may be separate pieces bolted to the frame.
Crankcase lubricating oil is supplied to all bearing surfaces from the
main lube oil pump. A segmental metallic seal called an oil scraper is
mounted in the crankcase where the piston rod passes through the dis-
tance piece. This device scrapes the oil from the piston rod during the
outward stroke of the piston. The oil drains back to the crankcase.
Figure 2-2 shows the principal components of a horizontal reciprocat-
ing compressor.
