                                 The Role of the

                                 Manager, Part 2

Who must account for himself and others must know
                                    both.
                                                           —George Herbert, 1593-1633
                                                             English clergyman and poet
Your job is not to criticize your employees, but to critique
                                    them.
                                                           —Andrew Grove, CEO, Intel Corp.
s stated in the preceding chapter, the key relationship in
Aretention is the relationship between the employee and his
or her manager. In this chapter, we’ll continue examining that
relationship in terms of the aspects that most positively pro-
                                 mote retention.
                                 The Manager as Company Representative

In the last chapter, we saw that the manager must act as a
buffer between senior managers (and other influencers) and the
employees. The manager must also act as a representative of
                                 the company to the employees.

                                                                                       171
