An introduction to soil and water

                   contamination

The improvements in the socioeconomic status of many people have come about thanks to
expansion of agricultural and industrial production. Some of the activities associated with
the expansion, however, have adversely affected soil and water quality, impacting on people’s
health and quality of life and on the environment. This book sets out to explain the physical,
chemical, and biological processes that govern the environmental fate of pollutants at
landscape scale, i.e. at a scale ranging from several tens of metres to hundreds of kilometres.
We need this knowledge to be able to develop appropriate solutions for a broad range of
                   environmental problems.
