shaft. The packing rests on a small lip in the packing holder that pre-
vents it from normally touching the shaft. If the shaft does touch this
packing because of thermal or other changes in the parts, the packing
is expected to move radially, thus compressing the loading springs. Two
views, Figs. 2.24 and 2.25, are shown of packing that is made by rolling
sealing strips into a casing or rotor. This type of seal design is com-
monly used at the blading tips on reaction type turbines.
