Horseshoe Style Seating (with Tables) (Figure 5-10)
This configuration to U-shape seating can increase the number of participants. It can
also allow easier grouping of learners into teams for activities. However, the disad-
vantage is that large group cohesiveness and networking can suffer if you do not move
people among groups throughout the session. Rectangular or round tables can be used.
High Learner Involvement Configurations (with Tables) (Figure 5-11)
Circular Style Seating (with Tables)
Setup
Place tables in a circular formation with chairs on the outside of tables facing in.
Maximum no. of participants
Limited by activity and table and room size, however, the participant number should be
kept to a size that allows each person to interact and offer input in a nonthreatening
environment. Typically a group of 18 or fewer participants works well.
Advantages
Fosters a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
Eliminates a “front of the room” and puts the facilitator in a less authoritarian role.
Everyone is on an equal status level.
Encourages problem-solving, decision-making, creativity, exchange and exploration of
ideas, and interpersonal communication.
