Open Square Style Seating (with Tables) (Figure 5-14)
Similar to the hollow and solid square style seating, this option to the circular style seat-
ing allows good group interaction. By removing one of the tables, you can enter the
square to better interact and make eye contact with learners. You can also use a flip chart
for capturing ideas and comments. All advantages and disadvantages of the hollow
square and solid square style seating are the same, except that the facilitator is no longer
on an equal status with participants. As a result, communication can be affected. In
addition, because of the arrangement of tables, some participants may have difficulty
viewing a flip chart.
Rectangular or Conference Style Seating (Figure 5-15)
This variation of the hollow square and solid square arrangement is created by arrang-
ing tables in a longer (rectangular) formation. Eye contact among the group members
thus is reduced at far ends of the tables. A psychological “head of the table” is estab-
lished, which can create the impression that people at either end of the table are of
higher status or in charge. As a result, communication and idea exchange could be
negatively impacted. The configuration also sets a more formal atmosphere.
High Learner Involvement Configurations (without Tables)
Circular Style Seating (without Tables) (Figure 5-16)
