Making Your Visual Message Sizzle 305
PLASTIC SUNCATCHERS. These come individually, or in packages with paints. They
come in all types of animal, celestial, geometric, and other shapes. Their real purpose is
to paint and hang on windowpanes so that light shines through them. From a creative
training perspective, you can place these shapes on your overhead glass to project onto
a flip chart page placed close to the projector. You can then trace the image onto the
paper and color it in. You can also project images onto a dry erase or chalkboard to add
graphics to your text, or to jazz up the appearance of your written messages.
WOODEN SHAPES. There are a variety of shapes (e.g., animals, houses, and flowers) that
are designed to be painted and used in various woodworking projects. These can also
be used like the suncatchers to project a shape onto a surface for tracing.
SHAPE TEMPLATES. By purchasing a variety of plastic shape templates, you can trace
images onto your handouts and transparencies, or project them as I explained earlier.
Templates can be found in craft, teacher and office supply, department, and many other
types of stores that sell school, art, or office supplies.
STICK-ON SHAPES. Many infant, bath, and home improvement supply stores sell
stick-on adhesive shapes that can be used on walls on in bathtubs. Like the wooden
shapes, these can be traced onto handouts, or can be projected and traced.
STENCILS. While searching a local craft store, I found some wonderful little books
that sold for a dollar and contain stencils that, like the shape templates, can be used to
trace various images.
STAINED GLASS COLORING BOOK. These inexpensive little craft store books have very
intricately drawn images of butterflies, animals, flowers, and shapes. They are on translu-
cent paper that can be placed on paper or onto a projector and traced. Don’t forget about
copyrights.

Package Your Presentation
se plastic transparency protectors or cardboard frames, onto which your
Utransparencies are taped. Either one allows ease of handling and the storage
of your transparencies in a three-ring binder. Put copies of you handout originals
and lesson plan in document protectors, along with a diskette containing all
presentation-related materials in the binder also. Finally, label the spine of the
binder with the session name and file it neatly on your bookshelf. When you are
ready to present or pack for travel to a training location, you simply grab the binder
and head out with the confidence that you have everything you will need to prepare
for the program. If you decide to use cardboard frames, you get the advantage
of having an area right beside your transparency to write key points, words, or
transition phrases to your next transparency. You can reference these notes as
you project and view the transparency during your presentation.
