                    Empathize with Learners

                                Let your participants know that you have done your homework, been in their position,
                                and researched your topic thoroughly. Also, let them know that because of your prepa-
                                ration you can relate to or understand their situation. Possibly share one or two per-
                                sonal experiences to demonstrate that fact. Also, talk about things you and they have in
                                common.


                    Self-Disclosure

                                One of the quickest ways I have found to gain acceptance with a group is to disclose
                                information about myself. This does not mean bragging about accomplishments; you
                                can list those on a biographical description included in handout materials. What I am
                                referring to is personal information (e.g., about background or family) that makes you
                                appear human and lets learners see you as a typical person like them. I also share a story
                                about myself, such as personal experiences of situations in which I was successful or
