110 INTERGALACTIC THINKING
to their relevance to one another. All the stars that have something to do
with music are clustered in one galaxy of thought. All the ideas relating
to golf are clustered in
another galaxy. Banking
data in yet another
galaxy. Data relating to
technology in its own
galaxy. And so on and so
forth for each and every
group of related ideas.
Each of these distinct
clusters of thought
would indeed look like
the star galaxies in our
vast physical universe.
Well, one can argue that our universe of thought is quite similar to the
realm of celestial bodies.
How Do Different Galaxies of Thought Relate?
As an example, let’s see how a stockbroker might look at her or his
galaxy in the context of some of the other galaxies in this universe
we’ve created.
Let’s start with the music galaxy. Does music have anything to do
with the brokerage business? Doesn’t seem to be closely related, does
it? But let’s push it a bit. Do brokerage firms play music in the office?
Sure, some do. Are some of the stocks handled by some brokerage
firms somehow related to music? Well, sure. Are some of the clients
handled by stockbrokers involved in music? Of course, all kinds of
people in music-related fields buy stocks. People who work at radio
stations, people who make, sell, buy, or use records or musical instru-
ments or sheet music or stereo equipment. There must be millions of
people. So music is not squarely related to the brokerage business, but
it’s not unrelated, either.
Let’s keep going.
How about the banking galaxy? Does anything in this galaxy have
anything to do with the stock brokerage business? Absolutely. I’ll bet
if you think hard enough you might find hundreds or even thousands
of bits of data. Gee, these distinct galaxies are seeming less and less dis-
tinct every minute.
How about the golf galaxy? What does that have to do with the bro-
