∗ Individual items that are made of materials applicable to several of the categories should be allocated to the
different categories on a weight percent basis.
† MRc2 may include weight of existing structural items which are to remain if MRc1.1 is not applied for.
‡ MRc2 may include weight of existing nonstructural shell items which are to remain if MRc1.2 is not applied for.
§ MRc2 may also include weight of other building materials not addressed in MRc1.1 which are to remain if
MRc3 is not applied for.

Intent
Facilitate the reduction of waste generated by building occupants that is hauled to and
disposed of in landfills.
Requirements
Provide an easily accessible area that serves the entire building and is dedicated to the
collection and storage of materials for recycling, including (at a minimum) paper, corrugated
cardboard, glass, plastics and metals.
Potential Technologies and Strategies
Coordinate the size and functionality of the recycling areas with the anticipated collection
services for glass, plastic, office paper, newspaper, cardboard and organic wastes to maximize
the effectiveness of the dedicated areas. Consider employing cardboard balers, aluminum can
crushers, recycling chutes and collection bins at individual workstations to further enhance the
recycling program.
Calculations and Considerations (LEED 2009 MRp1)
There are no calculations required for the submittal, but floor plans and recycling schedules/
contracts should be provided to verify compliance. The main consideration in the design of
