a facility is to provide adequate and appropriate space for the recycling activities. The LEED-
NC 2.2 Reference Guide does provide a guideline for the amounts of gross floor area (GFA)
that might typically service different commercial building sizes. These are reiterated and
smoothed into a graph in Fig. 5.0.2.
5.1 MR Credit Subcategory 1: Building Reuse
MR Credit 1.1: Building Reuse—Maintain Existing Walls,
Floors, and Roof (LEED 2009)
In LEED 2.2, this was subdivided into MRc1.1 and MRc1.2, with MR credit 1.1 worth
one point for 75 percent compliance, and MR credit 1.2 worth one point in addition to
MR credit 1.1 for 95 percent compliance. LEED 2009 has put these into the one notation
of MRc1.1 and has varying point values for compliance. One point for 55 percent, two
for 75 percent, and three for 95 percent. Refer to Table 5.0.0 for a summary of these
changes. Both versions encourage the reuse of structural materials of existing structures
if building on a site with an existing facility.
USGBC Rating System MR Credit 1.1
LEED-NC 2.2 lists the Intent, Requirements, and Potential Technologies and Strategies
for this credit as follows, with notations for the LEED 2009 changes included:
Intent
Extend the life cycle of existing building stock, conserve resources, retain cultural resources,
reduce waste and reduce environmental impacts of new buildings as they relate to materials
manufacturing and transport.
