The Practical Pumping Handbook
It is also important to remove any hazardous liquids and vapors from all
parts of the pump before bringing that unit into a confined area such as
the repair facility. This is particularly necessary if the pump is being
shipped out to an off-site location for repair, as that outside facility may
not be aware of the manner in which a particular hazardous material
must be handled. With any hazardous liquids a material safety data
sheet on that liquid should accompany the pump whenever it leaves the
plant.
While a decontamination process may be an obvious step for the wet
end assembly, it is not always so apparent for the bearing housing even
although the possibility always exists that excessive leakage from a
stuffing box could allow contaminated process liquid to enter the
bearing housing.
If your company conducts a regular lubricating oil analysis, the oil
should be drained from the bearing housing and a sample retained in a
clean container for inspection. In some cases that oil sample may assist
in identifying the cause of component failure. Once the oil is drained,
the bearing housing should be flushed and drained several times with
an acceptable solvent.
During dismantling, all wear parts should be collected, marked and
stored for inspection. This information will be useful for confirming or
identifying the root cause of the problem and determining the
necessary upgrades.
12.3 Removing the back pull-out assembly
To remove the back pull-out assembly of the end suction centrifugal
pump, place the sling through the pump flame adapter and have the
crane or hoist take the strain before removing the bearing housing
hold-down bolts and the casing/adapter bolts. The casing jacking
screws can then be tightened to withdraw the back pull-out assembly
from the pump casing.
At that point, the assembly can be removed to a clean work bench in a
clean environment. To facilitate further dismantling of the power end,
it is recommended that the bearing housing be secured to the
workbench by the bearing housing foot, and the adapter supported
until removed.
12.4 Inspection checks on cast parts
As the pump comes apart, the overall condition of the parts should be
