If a sleeve has been used, a determination should be made at this point
if that practice will continue. With the many mechanical seals on the
market that do not impose fretting damage on the shaft, the protective
sleeve is no longer required. In addition to which, a larger diameter
shaft (to the same O.D. of the sleeve) provides a higher resistance to
deflection and bending which increases the reliability of seals and
               bearings.

This opportunity to fit a stronger shaft, together with the other
upgrades identified in this Chapter, is in line with the consistent
upgrading of all the equipment in the plant, and contributes to a Total
               Reliable Strategy.

Please take note that the following information is intended only as a
general guideline, and should not be considered as detailed instruction.
The most reliable and up-to-date source of information will be the
manufacturers' installation, operation and maintenance manual.
For a bearing to function properly, it is essential that the utmost care be
taken with regard to cleanliness. Wherever possible, bearing installation
