location is ideally in walking distance from the personnel construction entrance to the
site, and logistically in the middle of the action. The PM should try to avoid having to
take an elevator or hoist to get to the CM/GC’s field office if possible to maintain con-
trol of the site and overall security.
Field offices and shanties should be built out of fire retardant materials to minimize
potential fire damage and comply with the local building codes, especially when the
building is ready for a temporary certificate of occupancy (TCO). At this point in the
project, all field offices and shanty spaces may have to be fully sprinkled, if required
by code. The installation of a permanent sprinkler loop (if required by local codes) with
temporary upright heads is often utilized to provide coverage of these temporary struc-
tures. As work progresses within the structure, the location of the shanties may have to
change. Exhibit 6-24 shows a phasing plan for the relocation of shanties.
