Plate 3 Mt Vesuvius with Naples in the background facing north. Some volcano tourists are rather casual when it
comes to wearing suitable shoes for the hike up the mountain (see insert). Photo courtesy of Jonathan Karkut
Plate 4 Hundreds of tourists enter the crater of Nisyros after they arrive by bus. A visit to the active volcano is
treated more like a family outing and the steep climb to the bottom of the crater does not appear to deter any of
the visitors (CS15). Although classed as active, no interpretive signs or information boards are posted. The only
instructions regarding safety are given by the bus drivers who tell the tourists to be ‘very, very careful’ because
the thermal springs in the crater are ‘very, very hot’. Photo courtesy of Patricia Erfurt-Cooper
