equipment for handling materials in a MRF. Several types are available including hinge, bucket,
apron, belt drag, screw, vibrating, and pneumatic (CEMA, 1995). Comprehensive engineering data
are available for many types of conveyors; as a result, their performance can be accurately predicted
when they are used for handling materials possessing well-known characteristics.
Factors to consider in the selection of the appropriate conveyor include (U.S. EPA, 1991):

• Capacity of the belt
• Length of travel
• Lift
• Characteristics of the material to be transported
• Overall cost
