7.4.3.4 Shredders
In terms of processing raw MSW, shredding is a unit operation designed for size reduction; how-
ever, other benefits also accrue. Shredders can be applied to items including scrap metal, plastic,
aluminum, wood, paper products, and possibly others. Shredders were originally developed for the
crushing of stone and ores. The shredder’s versatility has resulted in its application in other areas
besides processing MSW for recycling. For example, shredders now serve in construction and dem-
olition activities for breaking down concrete, steel, and other building materials.
