Know the Business:
Think and Act
Strategically
xcellent leadership requires that leaders at all levels under-
E stand the actual business of their organizations and be able
to think and act strategically in big and small ways. Leaders
must be able to think strategically about how they serve customers,
design products and delivery systems, and allocate resources to
both present and future value-producing activities. This big-pic-
ture, systems view of the organization enables leaders and organ-
izations to reach the highest levels of performance, effectiveness,
and efficiency.
Knowing the business and thinking and acting strategically go
hand in hand. Unless you have an in-depth knowledge of the busi-
ness, you have no context for acting strategically. When you have
this information, you need to be able to use it in a strategic way,
leading your team by conveying a compelling and common vision,
a customer-focused mission, a smart strategy, and effective goals
and tactics that are aligned with that strategy.
Having the ability to Know the Business and Think and Act
Strategically means that you are skilled in the following 11 com-
petency components.
