        standing the expectations and needs of your customers; thinking
        of customers in terms of classes and segments in order to allocate
        resources effectively; anticipating the impact of internal and exter-
        nal changes on the customers’ business and adapting services or
        products accordingly; responding proactively to customers’ chang-
        ing business needs; and developing new services or customers in
        areas that will contribute to the strategic growth of your business.

        COMPONENT 4: KNOWING THE STRUCTURE, SYSTEMS, AND PEOPLE
        This requires grasping the organization’s values, strategies, struc-
        ture and flow of work, culture and subcultures, functions of dif-
        ferent divisions, and communication and reward systems; knowing
        how to get things done through both formal and informal chan-
        nels; developing internal systems and processes that have the
        greatest positive impact on customer satisfaction and the achieve-
        ment of financial objectives; creating an organizational infrastruc-
        ture and developing an employee talent base to support current,
        medium-term, and long-term growth; understanding and sup-
        porting key policies, practices, and procedures, and following
        these in most instances, using shortcuts when necessary; and rec-
        ognizing your interdependence with functional areas outside your
        own work unit.
