Become an
Excellent
Communicator
eaders must communicate constantly and effectively with
L people at all levels, both within and outside the organization.
Communicating with others can be challenging and even
stressful. A great deal of skill and poise is often required—for
example, when delivering difficult performance feedback, manag-
ing conflict, and dealing with issues of politics and influence.
Becoming an excellent communicator means that you are
skilled in the following six competency components (see Figure
5.1):
1. Creating genuine relationships
2. Communicating clearly
3. Listening fully
4. Giving effective feedback
5. Managing conflict constructively
6. Influencing others
As you read further and reflect on the six competency compo-
nents of Become an Excellent Communicator, rate yourself in each
