Become an Excellent Communicator 141

should individuals of that style want to use their e-mail writing as
        a developmental stretch.
E-mails are used as developmental stretches because much of
today’s communication occurs electronically. Our e-mail writing
style also sheds light on who we are, how we think, and what we
feel. When you use e-mails to enhance your communication
skills, make sure you review each e-mail that you write before
you send it, analyzing the e-mail according to the Enneagram-
based communication tendencies described in this chapter.
Then, rewrite the e-mail and send it. Eventually, your new writ-
ing style will feel more natural and require less effort, and it will
also cause your language patterns to change during in-person
        conversations.

        Enneagram Style Ones

        Create Genuine Relationships
Ones have cordial and consistent interactions with
others as a result of their well-developed interper-
sonal manners and the fact that Ones usually say
what they mean and do exactly what they say they
will do. However, because Ones value politeness,
they do not always say exactly what is on their minds and may at
times be disingenuous—e.g., acting overly cordial to someone they
dislike intensely. In addition, when Ones are interacting with some-
one whom they do not respect or who they believe has an incor-
rect opinion, they can become irritated and unintentionally
        dismissive.
