Make Optimal
Decisions
ecision making is one of the most crucial tasks facing today’s
D leaders. Leaders must make decisions about issues both large
and small on a daily basis. Globalization has added new com-
plexities to decision making, and leaders no longer have the lux-
ury of time in which to consider their options. Today, leaders are
frequently required to make wise decisions very quickly.
Having the ability to Make Optimal Decisions means that you
are skilled in the following seven competency components (see
Figure 7.1):
1. Understanding the organizational culture
2. Honoring the organization’s decision-making authority
structure
3. Factoring in the context of the decision
4. Using your head to make rational decisions
5. Using your heart by listening to yourself and others
6. Using your gut by trusting your instincts
7. Making wise decisions by integrating your head, heart, and gut
As you read further and reflect on the seven competency com-
ponents of Make Optimal Decisions, rate yourself in each area on
