obstacles from their path, but not to dig deeply into the details.
Although you may enjoy details, your team needs you to operate
at a higher level so that you will have time to deal with the more
important issues.
Development Stretches for Everyone
• Observe four different sports teams and assess their effective-
ness along the team dimensions described in this chapter:
– Leadership (coach, team captain)
– Vision (focus)
– Talent (players)
– Architecture (roles, rules)
– Culture (morale, team values, team spirit)
– Processes (strategy, communication, rewards, sanctions)
– Quality products (results)
These can be professional, amateur, or even children’s
teams. Write down your observations. Once you have
observed all four teams, review your notes and answer these
questions: What differentiated a winning team from a losing
one? If you could coach the coaches of the losing teams, what
advice would you give them?
• Assess what you really think and feel about teams by
answering the following questions:
– Do you like teams? Why or why not?
– What team leaders have you encountered in the past that
brought out the best in you and your teammates? List the
characteristics of these leaders.
– What sorts of work activities can teams accomplish
more effectively than individuals by themselves, and
vice versa?
– In what ways do you excel as a team leader?
– What is your greatest development challenge as a team
leader?
