GOOD RECORD KEEPING
Here is the day’s practice schedule for Monday, December 12,
1969. Besides breaking down the time into our usual 5-, 10-, and
15-minute blocks of instruction, it notes the absence of one player,
Steve Patterson. I include this because it perhaps shows how we
tracked various elements of our practice schedule. In this case,
Steve Patterson missed all but 30 minutes of that day’s practice be-
cause he had a final exam.
With the graduation of Lewis Alcindor Jr. (Kareem Abdul-
Jabbar), Steve had become UCLA’s starting center. These notes re-
minded me that he was absent, gave the reason for his absence, and
showed what part of the practice he missed.
