The British Asian sociologist
Ali Rattansi argues that in racist
cultures ethnic identities are
racialized. This happens when
popular or specialized biological
discourses are combined with
cultural markers such as a
religion to "legitimate projects of
subject formation, inclusion and
exclusion, discrimination,
inferiorization, exploitation, verbal
abuse and physical harassment
and violence". He points out that
ethnic and racialized identities are
always multiple and contradictory
and marked by ambivalences.
