But identity is also about resources and the systems generated to
distribute them (or not, as the case may be). West gives the example
of working-class people hit hard by taxes, exploited as a group, who
scapegoat black people and women. Much "identity talk", West
asserts, is usually about victims.
He insists that identity must be discussed from all angles, and that
the role of whiteness, maleness and straightness must be examined
in relation to blackness or gayness.
