bell hooks

The Afro-American writer bell hooks - that's right, no capitals -
emphasizes the direct link between identity and political struggle.
She criticizes those who see cultural identity as "uncool" and a
               sign of political retreat.

She sees identity not as a constraint, but as a "stage in a process
wherein one constructs radical black subjectivity", thus generating
other options besides assimilation, imitation or rebellion.
