ornel West
According to Cornel West (b. 1953), the Afro-American intellectual,
identity is connected with affiliation - a longing to belong, to have
security and safety. But it is also to do with death. People are willing
to die for it, and sometimes identities are constructed with this in
mind.
Identity is about binding people together, but also about being bound,
often by "parochialist, narrow, xenophobic" notions.
