P. 130

The sense of deep alienation and powerlessness felt by black
people in America leads to a yearning for change - change that
can renew the black liberation struggle.

But renewal involves broadening the notions of black identity
which, at present, are very narrow. They must be seen in their true
complexity and variety. Black cultural criticism, hooks believes, can
make a difference. But she laments the almost total absence of
black female critics, despite a plethora of black women writing
            popular and literary fiction.
