The Subaltern Studies
collective is based around
Delhi University. Their main
organ is the annual journal
Subaltern Studies: Writings on
South Asian History and
Society, first published in 1982.
The term "subaltern" is drawn
from Gramsci's paper, "On the
Margins of History: history of
the subaltern social group"
(1934).
The subalterns represent the
demographic difference
between the total Indian
population and all those who
could be described as the
elite.
