he Influence of Gandhi

              South Asian cultural
              studies has two other
              important features. The
              first concerns the
              influence of M.K.
              Gandhi (1869-1948),
              the founder of modern
              independent India, on
              Indian culture and his
              reinterpretation as a
              "Green" leader. The
              impact of Gandhian
              thinking on ecology
              has produced a strong
              grass-roots ecological
              movement in India.

South Asian cultural studies has tackled these issues head-on,
as can be seen in the work of Vandana Shiva and Tariq Benuri.
