own, and some reach out for coaching or mentoring. The
bottom line is that the sooner you can understand the core
of who you are as a leader and intentionally show yourself
that way, the more successful you will be. Whether you
already know and live as an authentic leader or you are in
the process of defining your authenticity, this chapter will
give you some practical ways to build upon or develop this
important aspect of your leadership.
x SECRET 1: ACCEPT WHO z
YOU ARE AS A LEADER
Remember that your internal compass and authentic self
start with who you are inside, not how others see you or
want you to be. Once you start being more your true self,
you will experience a stronger sense of validation and
internal confidence. This starts with establishing a com-
fort level with who you really are as a leader. It’s important
for you to take the time to step back and identify your core
leadership values and principles. Then you need to “walk
the talk.”
Take a moment to ask yourself why people follow you as
a leader. Is it because of what you do or because of who you
are? Most likely, it’s more about who you are than about
what you do. To be authentic, you need a deep sense of self-
