teams, how long the process of change will take, and what
he will be doing during each phase of the transition. By
managing people’s expectations, it allows people to take
more responsibility for dealing with the cycles of change
effectively.
It’s important that you use every vehicle possible to
communicate both the new vision and the supportive
strategies, such as town halls, e-mail, podcasts, brown-bag
lunches, and one-on-one conversations. The message
needs to be the same each time you deliver it, and people
need to hear it over and over again if they are to believe that
the change is actually going to happen and that it will be
sustained over time. It also helps to give lots of examples
and tell personal stories, as people remember these better
than they remember general statements. Such stories also
ensure better understanding and greater interest, which is
what you are trying to achieve. Be creative and be enthusi-
astic, but also be authentic. People need to trust you if they
are going to trust in your vision.
