The Emerging
Career Model
The best part of the United Supermarkets CEO’s
day is going into the stores and interacting with team
members and guests. These meetings always provide
an opportunity to learn and serve as a reminder of
how much I do not know about everyday store
operations. As a rule, chief executives receive filtered
information in small bits. I know from experience
that if I do not consistently make it into the stores,
the chance of candid feedback finding its way to the
corner office is remote.
I recall one particular routine trip to a store. I
walked the aisles, spent time with guests, thanked
team members, and learned what was working and
