You Develop Others to Take Your Job
■ Give acceptance but do not tolerate poor performance.
■ Let people make mistakes.
■ Develop successors.
EVERYONE DESERVES TO BE DEVELOPED. It’s up to each individual to do
it for himself or herself, but if you want to be a leader, you create an envi-
ronment that intensely fosters it. Not all whom you help will “rise to the
occasion” and fulfill their destiny, but some will.
Who gets developed? Talented people who are needed to meet
strategic goals, those deserving a reward, those you want to retain, those
who ask, and very important, those who can take your job so that you can
get pushed up.
I was hard-charging, self-sufficient, and self-motivated. It took me a
long time to realize that my success would be measured by getting
others to succeed rather than just myself.
