About the Authors
George-Palilonis earned her bachelor’s degree and her master’s degree from Ball
State. She is the lead author of Design Interactive, an electronic textbook on basic
communications design principles and concepts. Her research interests include visual
rhetoric, media convergence, multimedia storytelling, and electronic textbook devel-
opment. She is currently writing a book titled A Practical Guide to Graphics Reporting
to be published by Focal Press in 2006.
Michael Hanley is an assistant professor of journalism
at Ball State University, where he teaches advertis-
ing, branding, media planning and buying, and mass
media research. He has more than 20 years of exec-
utive brand management, advertising and marketing
experience with two Fortune 500 financial services
companies (Lincoln Financial Group and Conseco),
a Fortune 500 energy company (Vectren), a national
accounting and consulting firm (Crowe Chizek and
Company LLP), and an energy systems distributor
(WaterFurnace of Indiana).
Hanley, who has a bachelor’s degree in visual
design from Purdue University and a master’s degree
in journalism from Ball State, consults on brand- 215
ing, strategic marketing, advertising, and database
marketing through his consulting firm, Hanley Communications. He has developed
BrandSmart TM , a proprietary brand development process, to help businesses develop,
manage, and nurture their brand equity.
His work in brand management, advertising, writing, marketing, and photogra-
phy has earned him several awards, including an international Telly Award for radio
advertising and a Pulitzer Prize as a news photographer at the Fort Wayne (Ind.)

Terry Heifetz is managing editor of NewsLink Indi-
ana, a multiple-platform regional news service based
at Ball State University. He also serves as the news
director of Indiana Public Radio. His work with
NewsLink Indiana allows him the opportunity to
work with students in providing a one-of-a-kind news
service for East Central Indiana. In addition to pub-
lishing at newslinkindiana.com, NewsLink reports
can be heard on Indiana Public Radio and viewed
on WIPB-TV, East Central Indiana’s public broad-
casting station.
Heifetz, who earned a bachelor’s degree in jour-
nalism from the University of Missouri, spent 15
years in the news business before he began teach-
ing Ball State students how to report and produce
in a converged news environment. Most recently, he has produced “The Wall Street
Journal Report” at CNBC. He also spent time working at The Weather Channel in
